Liburnia Film Festival (LFF) is the oldest documentary film festival in Croatia and the only festival that exclusively screens the latest Croatian documentaries. It takes place in late August in Opatija, bringing together numerous authors, film professionals and audiences from all over the country. The festival has had a competitive character from the very beginning, with jury and audience awards and special recognitions, while in 2013 industry awards were introduced for the first time in Croatia – for best director, best cinematographer, best editor and sound editing, in the attempt to point out the value of individual members of documentary film crews.
The festival program includes two competitive segments – the National and Regional Program – and a series of side events, including documentary film workshops, panel discussions and interviews with authors. The festival has significantly contributed to the popularization and development of Croatian documentary film, and with its open format and rich film selection, it attracts an increasing number of viewers and film enthusiasts every year.
