ABOUT THE MOVIE
Told in the vibrant Chakavian dialect, this short documentary presents the intimate testimonies of three generations of women devoted to the Rijeka Carnival. They recall how the first “tanac” (dance) began, how costume materials were smuggled across borders, and how magic was created under masks, often in modest conditions. The spotlight is on those who have long remained in the shadows of the Zvončari – the costume makers, dancers, and organizers.
As a symbolic culmination of this tradition and masquerade, the film ends with the selection of the Queen of the Rijeka Carnival – a woman whose presence, spirit, and passion embody the very soul of the carnival, bringing full circle a story of love, identity, and heritage.
